About the Author

Michishige Udaka (b. 1947) is a leading shite actor of the Kong School of Noh and a designated holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property. He studied under the second head of the Kong family, Kong Iwao II.

Throughout his distinguished career, he has performed major Noh masterpieces including Okina, Djji, Sotoba Komachi, Tokusa, and mu Komachi.

In 1985, he founded the International Noh Institute (INI). Unique among Noh performers, Udaka is also a Noh mask artisan and established the group Men no Kai, pioneering the practice of performing on stage using masks of his own creation.

He has trained over twenty instructors, nine of whom have become professional members of the Nohgaku Association. He currently serves as:

  • President of the Udaka Michishige Association

  • Head of Keiun-kai and Men no Kai

  • Vice Chairman of the Kong-kai

  • Member of the Japan Noh Theatre Association
